Chipping

A good short game can save a player several strokes per round. Putting is a big part of that, however let's not underestimate the importance of chipping. If a player has the ability to chip the ball well it will take a lot of pressure off of the the putting stroke and ball striking.

First, it is important to understand the concept of chipping. When a player hits a chip shot the desired result should be a shot that lands and rolls like a putt. Too many players get stuck on using only wedges around the green. Each player will need to experiment with all of the clubs to find out how they behave. Don't forget trying to chip with even the lofted woods. Many touring professionals will occasionally use a wood to hit a chip. If you take time and follow these simple steps you can become a great chipper of the golf ball.

    STEPS TO CHIPPING SUCCESS
  1. Always try to select a spot about 3' - 4' on the green to land your ball.
  2. Use the club that will allow the ball to run the rest of the way to the hole.
(minimum air time - maximum ground time)
  3. Choke down to the bottom of the grip.
  4. Set your weight on your forward foot.
  5. Keep your hands ahead of the ball.
  6. Use a putting type stroke with no wrist break.
(don't try to lift the ball into the air)
(let the loft of the club work)
  7. To be effective the player must be hitting down slightly at the moment of contact.
REMINDERS: Practice to develop your touch and club selection, then remember to focus on the spot where you want the ball to land on the green. Once you get good at hitting your spot 3' - 4' on the green you will become the recipient of many short tap in putts !!

GOOD LUCK AND PRACTICE !!
